Ingredients for Instant Pot Pinto Beans
- 1 pound of dry pinto beans (about 2 cups)
- 1 bay leaf
- ¼ teaspoon of ground black pepper
- 6 cups of water
- 1 teaspoon of Kosher salt
- 1 small diced yellow onion (approximately ½ cup)

- First, you are to rinse the beans but make sure you’ve picked out any stones, pebbles, or even non-bean materials.
- And, based on your preference, you can soak the beans in water overnight, as this will help reduce the cooking time.
- However, you need to know that this is not necessary as you will be using a pressure cooker and this is a no-soak recipe.
- With that being done, you are now ready to put the beans into the Instant Pot or pressure cooker. Proceed by adding onion, salt, water, bay leaves, and pepper.
- After that, you are to mix and make sure the lid is secure. The valve should then be turned to seal. When that is done, you are to set the pressure cooker to pressure cook.
- Alternatively, you can simply set it to manual. However, this depends on the model of your pressure cooker. Set it to high pressure and allow it to cook for 50 minutes for dry beans.
- And, for soaked beans, allow them to cook for 15 minutes. Afterward, allow the pressure to release naturally.
- So, just leave it alone for 15 minutes while it naturally releases the pressure. After that, you can quickly release any remaining pressure.
- All you have to do is switch the valve to “vent.” Now, you can remove the lid and the bay leaf, but you must carefully remove the bay leaf.
- With that being done, you can drain the beans, or you can just scoop the beans out using a slotted spoon.
- Or, you can just decide to enjoy them with the cooking broth. It is tasty. Now, you can serve and garnish your healthy pinto beans with chopped cilantro, but this is based on your preference.
How Long Do Pinto Beans Take To Cook In An Instant Pot?
The cooking time will be shorter if you soak the beans before cooking. For softer beans, you can just add a few minutes to the cooking time.
However, for firmer beans, you can just reduce the minutes a bit from the cooking time.

- You can store your pinto beans in the fridge. All you need to do is allow them to cool off completely before you proceed with the storing process.
- After that, you can put them in a leak-proof and sealed food container or just get a Ziploc bag. Now, you can store them in the fridge, which will allow them to last for up to 5 days.
Freezer
- Additionally, you can also store your pinto beans in the freezer, which will allow them to last for up to 5 months.
- The process is almost the same because you also need to allow it to cool completely before you proceed to store it in a sealed food container or Ziploc bag. Make sure you store them with the liquids from the Instant Pot.
How to Reheat Pinto Beans

Instant Pot
- Funny, you can use an Instant Pot or pressure cooker to both cook and reheat pinto beans. Put the frozen pinto beans in the pot if they are frozen.
- Then, proceed to add 1/3 cup of water. After that, close the lid and make sure it is secure. The valve should now be turned to the sealing position.
- With that being done, you can now cook on Pressure Cooking, Manual, or Steam for 8 minutes. And, if your pinto beans are not frozen, you are to set the timer for 5 minutes.
- And, then, go for the natural release, which should be for 5 minutes. Then comes the quick release.
Dutch Oven
- This is also another way you can reheat your pinto beans. All you need to do is put your pinto beans in a Dutch oven.
- And, then proceed to add 1/3 to ½ cup of water, and bring to a simmer. After that, allow the beans to warm through in 5 minutes.
